Our Office partnered with the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy to launch cutting-edge technology to help prescribers and pharmacists reduce opioid overprescription. The Attorney General formed a partnership with U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II to prosecute drug trafficking across northern West Virginia. The Office, in collaboration with groups involved in the pharmaceutical supply chain, developed Best Practices Toolkit – suggested guidelines for prescribing and dispensing opioids - to curb the prescription pill epidemic in West Virginia. Finalization of the best practices initiative continues the Attorney General’s push to reduce prescription of opioid medication as a first-line therapy option. These drugs, such as Lortab and Vicodin, have characteristics similar to heroin. The Attorney General’s plan provides recommendations to prescribers and pharmacists who prescribe or dispense opioid prescriptions across West Virginia. It is designed to reduce misuse, while preserving legitimate patient access to necessary treatment.
